Graually. You want to adjust the gray bar that allows the color you paint to lay lighter or heavier. Then there's the combination of colors that can cause a piece to turn out muddy or just right (that is usually a personal preference of your own color combination combine with what you see). Usually contrasting colors can be used in shadows in a sparing manor (depending on the tone or lighting of a piece) to determine a deep, contrasting, and overall fulfilling shading effect. It took me a little while to adjust and familiarize with these online paint programs. Still am.

tablets can be tricky at first, but it gets better and better. Like you were told, try to use a big brush with a low opacity (grey bar) and it'll blend pretty nicely. Always remember, background to foreground, and big stuff to details.
